Lore And Lutes

About Lore And Lutes

What is Lore And Lutes?
Lore and Lutes (L&L) is an adventure\RPG game similar in style to Ultima IV or V. It features the things that make any good RPG, a story, dynamic and interesting characters, involved battle simulations, and more. But L&L is more than just an RPG, it's an entire game creation system! The L&L editor makes Lore a unique and fun program.

Whats so Special About the Editor?
Two words: Flexibility and Ease. Most games that come with editors allow the user to do a few simple things: like editing maps and placing prebuilt "cookie cutter" objects onto these maps. Lore And Lutes, however, allows the user to edit everything from the terrains, to the monsters, to the vehicles monsters use to move across terrains! No doubt though, the thing that gives the editor so much flexibility and power is the Lore and Lutes Object Oriented Language (LOOP). LOOP is used to program the units and items within a game.

Despite the flexibility the L&L editor is still fairly easy to use. In a few hours, maybe a few minutes, programming prebuilt objects and building maps can be learned. And in a day or two LOOP (the language of L&L) can mastered. A simple RPG game could easily be built in a day or two using the L&L editor.

Hopefully the L&L editor will inspire and help people from all across the Internet to create their own adventure games. (By the way if you have created a good L&L e-mail me and I'll post it on this site.) If and when this happens Lore And Lutes would become more then just one game though, it would expand into new games as people write them. Lore And Lutes will allow people to write the RPG stories in their imaginations and share them with the rest of the world.

But don't get too Excited Just Yet...
L&L has a long way to go before people other then me start using it, I hope they start using it anyways :-). The fact is the project is still in its Alpha stages, meaning it's being developed. This web site's purpose is currently to track L&Ls development. But there is a lot the be excited about.

Is Lore an Open Source Project?
Yes, Lore And Lutes is fully open source. Parts of it are licensed under the LGPL and other parts under the GPL. You can download the L&L source or view the CVS tree at the sourceforge project site. Lore And Lutes has a very modular design, meaning that parts of it, such as the graphics library and scripting language can easily be used by other programmers to integrate into their own games.

Can I Help Develop Lore?
If you've played L&L, are excited about what it could become, and know C++ then absolutely! The first step towards helping to develop L&L is learning how it's programmed, the L&L's design section gives a general overview of how L&L is layed out. Next E-mail me at: astone42@attbi.com, tell me how you think you can help, and I'll see if I can't get you involved in the process somehow.

What If I Don't Know C++?
As Lore And Lutes matures I'll need people to Beta test the thing, checking for errors and spelling mistakes. The best thing you can do for now is check in and see where L&L is every few weeks. Please don't swarm me with feature requests or bug reports just yet though, L&L is still Alpha and I know it's buggy. Also, I'm terrible at spelling and grammar, so if you notice a dumb mistake on this page feel free to inform me and I'll try to update it ASAP.

Is there any Documentation On L&L? Unfortunately, I haven't written a whole bunch of documentation on how to play/edit Lore And Lutes, but by the time L&L is done there will be plenty of documentation. For now this web site is about it.
